Noravank Monastery
Vayots Dzor, Armenia
Cultural Treasure
Noravank, meaning “new monastery,” is one of the architectural masterpieces of Armenia, constructed just over 800 years ago. Arriving to the complex adds to the charm, as a winding road through the red rock cliffs of the Gnishik Canyon finally reveals the monastery of the same color. The carvings, the steps leading the the second floor, and how it blends into the environment makes it feel it has always been and belonged at that spot. Originally started construction in 1204 A.D., most of the structure was completed a century later by Momik, a skillful architect and sculpter, who is credited to the unique design and mesmerizing details.
The monastic complex gained in importance from the 13th to 14th centuries under the Orbelian dynasty; however, Timurlane’s invasion haltered its importance in the region. The field of khachkars (carved cross stones) in the vicinity are also some of the finest found. One particularly beautiful one, carved in 1333 in memory of the architect, reads “May Christ remember and have mercy on Momik’s soul.”
